Let’s Groove – Autism Voice

Weekly Creative Music Programme for Autistic Young Adults (16–30)

Grooveschool × Autism Voice

Programme Overview

Let’s Groove is a specialised weekly creative music programme designed for autistic young adults aged 16–30, delivered in partnership with Autism Voice. Running from January 2023 to 2024, the project supported 16 autistic young adults, including non-speaking participants, profoundly autistic learners, and those with multiple learning needs or dual diagnoses.

Sessions provided a calm, sensory-friendly space where participants could explore DJing, music production, beat-making, podcasting, lyric writing, and live sound. For many, Let’s Groove became the only structured activity they attended each week — a place where they could be themselves, express emotion, and build confidence without pressure.

Participants

  • 16 autistic young adults (ages 16–30)

  • 8 carers attending regularly

  • Range from independent autistic adults to profoundly autistic learners

  • Including Orchard Hill participants (profound autism, low communication)

  • 1 young adult with Down’s syndrome + autism

  • Several non-speaking or minimally speaking participants

Many had limited prior access to specialist creative provision.

What We Delivered

Weekly Monday-morning sessions combining:

  • DJing (vinyl, CDJs, scratching, beat-matching)

  • Beat-making using Ableton Live and hardware

  • Live microphone work, lyric creation, rap development

  • Podcasting & recorded conversations

  • 1:1 sensory-friendly support

  • Calm, flexible environment with consistent routine

  • Multi-staff team (lead tutor, assistant tutor, and three specialist volunteers)

Attendance remained high, with 14–16 participants weekly at peak.

Impact & Outcomes

1. Communication Breakthroughs

  • A non-speaking Chinese participant began humming and creating audible melodic patterns into a microphone.

  • A young man with Down’s syndrome gained confidence to rap and record vocals.

  • Non-speaking participants used sound, microphones and rhythm as new channels of expression.

These moments became anchors of progression and pride for families and carers.

2. Wellbeing, Regulation & Positive Emotion

Carers and staff observed:

  • Calmer moods after sessions

  • Increased joy, smiling and laughter

  • Strong anticipation: participants regularly asked when the next session was

  • Reduced anxiety due to predictable structure and hands-on tasks

Creative engagement provided meaningful sensory regulation through vibration, movement and focused sound interaction.

3. Engagement & Flow States

Participants showed:

  • 20–40 minutes of uninterrupted focus

  • Deep sensory engagement with turntables, samplers and software

  • Strong attachment to favourite tasks — DJ decks, mic work, beat-making

  • Consistent weekly attendance, even for learners who normally struggle with group activities

4. Relationships, Trust & Social Development

The group became a supportive community:

  • Participants shared equipment and learned turn-taking

  • Strong bonds formed between tutors, carers and learners

  • Peer collaborations emerged (e.g., rapper + beat-maker pairings)

  • Independent autistic learners developed improved social tolerance

One participant, Lema, became a consistent presence and transitioned into a podcast co-producer — a significant milestone.

5. Meaning & Identity

Participants developed a sense of purpose:

  • “I’m a DJ.”

  • “I made this track.”

  • “This is my mix.”

For some families, this was the first time their young person’s work had ever been recorded, celebrated or shared.

Let’s Groove became a place where autistic young adults could express identity without judgement or expectation.

6. Accomplishment & Creative Achievement

Participants produced:

  • Full DJ mixes

  • Beat patterns & intro-level tracks

  • Podcast episodes

  • Collaborative rap/production pieces

These accomplishments built confidence, agency and self-worth.

Why This Programme Matters

For many autistic young adults, community provision is limited, inconsistent, or ill-fitted to sensory, communication or independence needs.

Let’s Groove provides:

  • A safe, non-judgmental space

  • A predictable weekly routine

  • Creative autonomy and choice

  • A supportive social community

  • Meaningful emotional expression

  • A bridge between isolation and engagement

Carers repeatedly described the programme as the highlight of the week.
